Review: Playfoam

I was intrigued when we first opened the pack of Playfoam we had been sent to review.  From reading the description: 'completely mess-free creative play fun' I have to admit to being a bit underwhelmed when I saw what it looked like up close.  It didn't look like much and when I opened it and felt the texture I was even more puzzled...it was a slightly sticky, bobbly product.  To be completely honest I couldn't see the appeal.

So I was totally surprised when the kids grabbed it out of my hands and started playing.  Within minutes they had squashed it together and created sculptures...they pulled it apart and used it in their imaginary play games with Meg serving up a delicious plateful of green and yellow foam...Meg even added it to her beauty salon and performed manicures for my parents when they visited!

This is a rabbit that Meg made:

The thing that I really appreciated about the Playfoam is that it is actually mess free.  The recommended age for it is 3+ and I agree with this.  Whilst Eli has enjoyed playing with it, he tends to pull each individual ball out of the foam and spread it around the house, which somewhat defeats the point!  However, despite him doing this, it has been quite easy to clear up as it hasn't stuck to anything and we can just vacuum it up or pick the pieces up and add them back into the original foam.

We have been playing with the foam for nearly a month, on a regular basis (at least once every other day) and it is still in the same condition it was when we first opened the packet.  It has collected a few stray dog hairs if it's been left out on the floor but these are easy to remove as again, it doesn't really stick to much.

We are even taking it with us to play with in the car when we go away on Friday as we know it will occupy Meg but without creating total chaos.  There aren't many creative play items you can say that about!

Both Meg and Eli really seem to enjoy playing with it as well, so despite my initial sceptism, I have to say that it has been a really great resource.  It's a quick solution for a bit of messy play without any of the tidying up afterwards!!

If you're quick, Learning Resources are running a competition on their Facebook page to win one of 8 packs of playfoam.  Well worth entering.

If you aren't lucky enough to win one of the packs, they retail on the Learning Resources website for £9.00 - there are a variety of pack options and sizes too.

Disclaimer: We were sent the 8 pack of Playfoam for review purposes.  All thoughts and opinions are my own.
