£50 Road Trip Challenge: The May Mummies

About 5 years ago, I sat at my laptop and hesitantly typed out a message:

'Hi, I'm pregnant too.  Can I join?'

At the time, I had no idea that what started out as a small group of ladies sharing the same due month for their first babies, would become 'The May Mummies', a permanent fixture in my life.  10 women sharing in the highs and lows of more than just pregnancy.  We have become a group of friends who talk about all aspects of our busy and hectic lives from relocations and house moves to second children to times when things have been really tough and we've needed a supportive hand.

We are from all walks of life, all different parts of the country from way up in Aberdeen right down to the South and yet none of that matters when we come together as a group.

We speak with each other almost every day.  They were the first people I told when I found out I was pregnant a second time, the first ones I talked to about Eli's heart murmur, the first people I told about my blog and, my husband aside, probably the people who know the most about the everyday things that go on in my life!

I know it sounds sappy, but they are honest without being judgemental, generous with their time and with their belongings (one of the ladies has kept Eli well clothed since he was born!) and I can't imagine not being able to share this parenting journey with them.  They are truly a fantastic group of ladies.

But, to the road trip!!

When the lovely people at Moneysupermarket.com offered me £50 to go on a road trip, I knew there was only one place I wanted to go.  For me, the best part of this challenge was who I got to spend time with.  After all, driving up the M6 isn't the most thrilling route in the world but I shared the journey with one of the May Mummies and it was really great to be able to catch up without having to turn around every 5 minutes to deal with a random request from a small back seat passenger!

The destination of our trip was a Manchester meet up for the mummies to relax together and we did it in style.

We started out by catching up and eating some delicious cupcakes.

We followed this up by drinking champagne and devouring chocolate covered strawberries.

We painted our nails and nattered.  Then we went out for a lovely meal followed by cocktails.  Not all of the May Mummies could make this meet up, so we had a few drinks on their behalves!

The next morning our fabulous hostess for the weekend provided us with a delicious full english breakfast, and we didn't even have to share it with a small person.  I'm sure the majority of parents out there can understand how brilliant that was!

I am so lucky, not only to have been able to drive up to Manchester and have a lovely night out, but to have made such a fantastic set of friends.  I hope that in 15 years time when our children have all grown up and we're rattling around our houses, that we still make time to sit and share about our days.  I can't imagine it any other way!

Disclaimer: I was provided with £50 from Moneysupermarket.com for the purpose of this post.  All thoughts and opinions are my own.

  2. So fantastic of Money Supermarket to do that for you! It does look like you had a great time. These support networks are super important - it is one of the reasons I started my blog when I became an expat!
