Three Ideas For A Little Adventure... ǀ Outdoors

I wrote a post back in April about how much we love being outdoors as a family and the ways in which you can be prepared for any occurrence, no matter what might happen!  Having just had the summer, it was obviously the perfect time to get out and about but even with the arrival of the cooler weather and the general expectation of rain, there are still lots of ways you can enjoy being outside as a family.

Today I thought I might share with you just three ideas for a great little family adventure.  All three are things we have tried and tested so they come with Meg and Eli's stamp of approval as well!

1. Map It Out
One of the best adventures we have ever had (and that takes some doing!) was the day we woke up to the sun shining and decided that we would get out a map of our local area, allow one of the kids to close their eyes and randomly place their finger on the map.  Wherever they chose, we would go.  It didn't need to cost a lot; apart from the cost of travel, we could pack up a picnic, stick some spare clothes in a backpack (FYI they have some really great backpacks at the moment in Skate Hut) and then just head out to see what was there.  We ended up having such a brilliant day, discovered a little pocket of beauty quite close to where we lived and it was probably somewhere we would never have thought to visit otherwise.  The kids were beside themselves with excitement that we had literally no idea what we were going to find and that it was entirely down to them.

2. Let It Rain
There's something quite off-putting about going outdoors when it rains, especially for adults.  I know for me, the sound of rain hitting the windows is a good excuse to curl up under a blanket with my book and a hot cup of tea!  But there's also something incredibly refreshing about heading out into the wet weather and kids just seem to adore it.  Meg and Eli love it when we shout for them to grab their coats and wellies and we head out into the wet.  So, you might get a little bit mucky and wet...what's the worst that is going to happen?  Plus, there's nothing better than coming back home and getting a hot shower followed by a movie night with hot chocolate and treats.  And worn out children.  That's a win in my book.

3. A Night Walk
This one is perfect as the season turns as it gets darker much earlier; so you can take the kids out when it is pitch black and still get them in bed on time.  This is another real favourite; it doesn't cost a penny, doesn't need to take up much time, but is a real adventure for children.  A while back we bought the kids head torches and they absolutely love it when James takes them out for a night walk with their torches.  They have created a whole story about a monster who lives in the village and hides behind lampposts waiting for noisy children coming out after dark and I love hearing their squeals as they set off down the road.  Half an hour walking around your local streets in the dark?  You'd be surprised how different things appear!  Obviously not ideal if you have little ones who are afraid of the dark but for most children it's an absolute highlight.

Three easy adventures to have with your children.  Let me know if you have any more ideas, I'd love to hear them!
